Meet the 2025 WA STEM Grant Recipients

 Inspiring WA is proud to announce the recipients of the 2025 WA STEM Grants.


This year’s projects celebrate community-led science and aim to make science more inclusive and engaging across Western Australia. For the first time, the grant process included two stages with tailored feedback to help new organisations apply and support events for underrepresented communities.



Ballajura Community College – Growing Together: Digging into Science and Culture 

Location: Ballajurra 

 

Held at the Ballajura Community Garden, this event explores sustainability, plant science and cultural heritage. Highlights include student-led plant stations and workshops on seed bomb making, natural dyeing and digital plant ID.

Bibbul Ngarma Aboriginal Association – Mandoon Bilya BioBlitz Festival 

Location: Mundaring, Guildford & Helena Valley 

 

A week of BioBlitz events combining hands-on ecological discovery with Noongar cultural learning, led by local Elders and scientists. This concludes with the Mandoon Bilya BioBlitz Festival, featuring talks, community stalls, food trucks and more.


Level Her Up – Game Dev 101 

Location: Perth, Joondalup, Murdoch, Bentley 

 

A beginner-friendly workshop series and game jam for women and non-binary people. Participants learn coding, game design, and storytelling, concluding with a collaborative weekend to create original games.  

 

Foundation for the WA Museum – FameLab Australia Final 

Location: Perth 


A national science communication competition where 12 early-career researchers present their work to the public. Participants receive professional training and represent diverse voices in STEM. The event brings science to the broader public through entertaining, accessible storytelling.

WA Gould League – Empowering Women in Regional STEM through Citizen Science 

Location: Geraldton & Jurien Bay 

 

A series of citizen science workshops held in regional communities focused on biodiversity. Led by women scientists and First Nations’ knowledge holders, the sessions engage girls and women through activities like building insect hotels, using microscopes, and more. 


Khalsa Club of WA – LEGO Holiday Workshop 

Location: Canning Vale 


This fun school holiday program uses LEGO to bring science to life for children and families in the Sikh community. Workshops encourage creativity, teamwork, and critical thinking, with themed builds like Star Wars and Pokémon to appeal to all ages. 


Science Teachers Association of WA – Quantum Brunch 

Location: Bunbury, Mandurah, Albany, Geraldton & Kalgoorlie 


An event for high school girls and their mentors to explore STEM careers, with a focus on physics and engineering. This includes inspiring talks from women in STEM and hands-on quantum science activities to spark interest and support future opportunities.

This is great news! It is very pleasing to see that the Inspiring WA program has announced the winners of the WA STEM 2025 grants, as such initiatives really help to make science more accessible and closer to people. It is particularly important that this year, for the first time, a two-stage application process with personalized feedback was introduced — this greatly simplifies participation for new organizations and allows for support for events focused on underrepresented communities. Such projects not only expand opportunities for education, but also inspire communities to launch their own science initiatives.
